After putting one track on Soundcloud last November, the artist Nao picked up Bellatrix and played her on her BBC R1 show, with repeat plays following immediately at BBC6 Music via Tom Robinson. A relevant introduction to the cool, blisteringly inventive Bellatrix. Following further tastemaker pickup from DUMMY and THE LINE OF BEST FIT for her second release ‘Be Your Bitch’, Bellatrix now drops the 3rd track from her upcoming debut EP.
Again a deeply engrossing mix of inventive synth, lush ampling and tropical shouts, alongside subtly African rhythms, ‘After More’ is another assertive step into Bellatrix’s jagged, futuristic and deeply interesting world. Again co-produced with Exmoor Emperor and mixed by Dillip Harris (Mount Kimbie, King Krule, Django Django etc), this is thrilling, exotic music from an important new London artist.
Studying jazz double bass at Guildhall School of Music, Bellatrix was earning a living as a bass player when she recently started to write her own music and taught herself to sing.
Citing influences from Kate Bush to MIA to Charles Mingus to Sun Ra, it’s clear that Bellatrix’s depth as an artist reflects her musical output in terms of range and invention. Speaking on the track, Bel states: Kind of like my first single, ‘Still Looking For’, this is another track about reconnecting with the wild and the mystical, and how things that were once natural to human kind have become abstract and forgotten as the modern world forces us into numbness. It’s about searching, surrender, and the cyclic nature of the feminine.”
